Kernersville - Harold D. Jones, 93, died July 13, 2009 with his family at his side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00PM Wednesday July 15, 2009 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Joseph Kelleher officiating. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. A native of Lapeer, Michigan, he was the son of the late Mae Morrison and Allen Jasper Jones. He was a WWII US Navy Veteran having served in the South Pacific. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and was retired as National Safety Director after 43 years with Leaseway Trucking Company. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Ruth Amelia Uren Jones who died in 1990. Survivors include his son Ronald D. Jones and his wife Janet of Kernersville; grandchildren David C. Jones and his wife Katherine, Stephen A. Jones, and Suzanne E. Brookshire and her husband John; great-grandchildren Rachel Elizabeth Jones and Jackson Alexander Jones; sisters Mary Chesley and her husband Paul, and Joy Kaczorowski. Kernersville - James Edward Garber, 71, went home to be with his Lord on July 9, 2009. Funeral Services celebrating his life will be held at 11:00AM Monday July 13, 2009 at Gospel Light Baptist Church in Walkertown with Dr. Bobby Roberson and Rev. Frank Shumate officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Gur Cemetery. A native of Clayton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charlotte Neff and Perry Melvin Garber. He was retired from ABF and Carolina Freight Trucking. He was a longtime member of Gospel Light Baptist Church and was a member of Brother Frank’s Sunday School Class. He was a US Air Force Veteran. In addition to his parents he also was preceded in death by his step-grandson Tyler Rayphole. Survivors include his loving wife of over 30 years Barbara Garber of the home; daughters Sharon Phillips of Clovis, California, and Brenda Washington of Las Vegas, Nevada; step-daughter Lisa Pfouts and Rob of Hahira, Georgia; step-sons James Rayphole and Michelle, Carwin Rayphole, Jr. and Sandi, and Sean Rayphole and Marti all of Belvidere, Illinois, and William Rayphole and Kimberly of Rockford, Illinois; sister Marilyn Boring and Jack of Lakeland, Florida, Virginia Curtiss and Albert of Arcunum, Ohio, and Betty Hart and Glenn of Vandalia, Ohio; brother Melvin Garber and Barbara of Centerville, Ohio; one grandchild and 10 step-grandchildren. Kernersville - Pearl Robbins McCuiston, 87, went home to be with her Lord on July 8, 2009. She fought a good fight and was surrounded by her loving family at her passing. A native of Forsyth County, she was the daughter of the late Grace Lucinda Fogle and Joseph Pinkney Robbins. She was a life long member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. Pearl was retired after many years with Adams Millis, but truly enjoyed her work as a coffee greeter at Hardee’s on S. Main Street. Anyone who knew her was blessed by her giving, serving, and loving spirit. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Wayne McCuiston, and a sister Dorothy Reid. Kernersville - Francis John Potter, 93, passed away peacefully, in his loving wife’s arms, on June 28, 2009. Committal Services will be held at 2PM at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Alice Bordeau and Joseph William Potter, Sr.. He was one of the original parish members of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was a 1937 graduate of Harvard University. He was a WWII and a Korean War Veteran serving with the US Navy. Francis was a manufacturers sales representative for raw yarn. He was married in April of 1964 to Telia Elizabeth Chafin. Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years Telia C. Potter of Kernersville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro. A native of Guilford County, Eddie was the son of the late Thelma Williams and Alton Dewey Boggs. Eddie, and his wife Diane, are the owners of Ghostriders Saloon in Elkin. Eddie living life for the moment, and cherishing each one, will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was also a US Army Veteran. Graveside Services celebrating her life will be held 2:00PM Saturday at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ellis Rouse and Rev. Phil Bauguess officiating. She was born December 23, 1936 in Forsyth County, to Louella Matthews Smith who survives and the late Cyrus Paul Smith. She was a graduate of Robert B. Glenn High School Class of 1955, where she was president of the student body and Class Valedictorian. While at Glenn High School she was named All County Basketball Player, and she was a Santa Filomena honor graduate of the NC Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in the Class of 1958. She was retired in 1987, after 30 years of service, as an occupational Nurse with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. She was a docent at the Reynolda House and the historian with many records of her classes and her family. She was a longtime member of the Sedge Garden United Methodist Church. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her brother Wallace Paul Smith and her sister Linda Combs Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory, her mother Louella Matthews Smith of Kernersville; sister Kay Smith McEntire and her husband Jerry L. McEntire, Sr. of Kernersville; sister-in-law Sandi Smith; nieces Erin Gambrell Kangiser of Stockbridge, Georgia, and Krista Combs DesChamps of Wilmington; nephews Mark Smith of Kernersville, Stephen Smith of Anderson, S.C., Forrest Vance Gambrell of Winston-Salem, and Joel Combs of Charlotte; step-children Helene Erickson of Sweden, Valentina and Hilda Dibbi of Winston-Salem, and Sylvia and Bobby Callender of Winston-Salem; and a host of cousins, great-nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren, and extended family and friends who will miss her loving spirit, her joyous nature, her kindheartedness, and her fun. Kernersville - Alvin E. Davis, 80, died June 22, 2009. A memorial service for Alvin E. “Gene” Davis. Jr. will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 2009 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4440 Jackson Blvd., Columbia, South Carolina. He will be interned in a family plot in the Society Hill LDS Cemetery, Society Hill, South Carolina. Alvin Eugene (Gene) Davis, Jr., 80, died Monday, June 22, 2009, of natural causes in Greensboro, NC. He is predeceased by his sweetheart wife June W. Davis. Gene was born May 1, 1929 in Alcoa, Tennessee, the son of the late Alvin E. Davis and Mary Lucinda Tallent Davis. Gene is survived by his four children: Deon Davis Haderlie of Stokesdale, N.C., Tanya Davis French of Walnut Creek, C.A., Piper Davis of Charleston, S.C., and Alvin (Vin) Eugene Davis, III of Alpharetta, G.A., and his twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister: Virginia Davis May of Sweetwater, TN and “kid-brother” Jeptha Houston (JH) Tallent of Decatur, AL. Gene was a loving husband for over 53 years of the late June Watson Davis. He was an avid family man and devoted father and grandfather. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration. He owned an independent insurance agency and retired in 1994. Gene was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and spent his last years serving at the Atlanta, Georgia and Columbia, S.C. temples. He led a life of great integrity and service to his community, church, and family.
