Rev. Mr. Gene Gillis, 87, went home to be with his Lord June 14, 2017.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held ll:OO AM Monday June 19, 2017 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Louis Canino, O.F.M. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

There will be a Vigil for the Deceased and a Rosary will be held beginning at 6:30PM Sunday June 18, 2107 at Holy Cross Catholic Church followed by a visitation with the family and friends.

A native of New York, NY,Deacon Gene was the son of the late Eva Marie Jadick and Thomas Henry Gillis.

In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Christine Marie Majorossy Gillis, brothers Thomas Gillis, Theodore Gillis, and Robert Gillis, and granddaughter Patricia Kay.

He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from City College of New York. He served his country with the United States Army from 1951through 1955. He would later work at Western Electric/AT&T for over thirty years. He was a founding member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Upon retirement from AT&T,he would enter the Seminary and was ordained to the Permanent Deaconate on July 2,1988. Deacon Gene was assigned to serve at Holy Cross Church and also Sacred Heart Church in Southport, NC. Having reached the age of 75, he retired as a Deacon in 2004, but continued to serve the Parish he loved as needed and as he was able until his death.

Survivors include his children Peter Gene Gillis and Kay of Wake Forest,Nina Ribet and James of Kernersville, Katie York and James of Walkertown, Janine Gillis of Alexandria, VA, Andrew Gillis and Kelly Greenwood of Alexandria,VA, Matthew Gillis and Gene Ward of Burlington, and Robert Gillis of Raleigh; thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brother Father Joseph Gillis of Waymart, PA; and a host of extended family and friends .
