Celebrating the life of Mother Lorraine Maness Jones

May 25, 1936 – June 25, 2017

Lorraine Jeanette Maness Jones was born in Moore County, NC on May 25, 1936 to the late Laney and Novella Maness. She attended Pickney High School in Carthage, NC and graduated in 1955. After her graduation she moved to New York City and temporarily lived with her aunt. She first started cleaning houses but later applied for a job at the United States Post Office. It was at the post office that Lorraine Jeanette Maness met the late James S. Jones Jr. They later married in 1970 and stayed together for 23 years until he passed away. Lorraine worked at the United States Post Office until she retired in October, 1992.

While in New York City Lorraine had two children; Barbara Maness Bos (Thomas) and Doretha (better known as Rita) Maness Owens (Ishmael). After living in New York City for twenty years, Lorraine put in for a transfer at the post office and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. Shortly after moving to NC she became the adopted mother of Lisa Edwards Shoffner (Kenyatta). After the death of her husband Lorraine moved in with her daughter, Doretha (Rita) Maness Owens. She remained with her until she transitioned to be with her heavenly Father.

In 1988 Lorraine rededicated her life to the Lord and joined the Power House of Deliverance Church where her daughters were members. After joining the church she served as an assistant secretary of the Sunday school class and was on the Matron’s Board under the leadership of the late Bishop Johnny Covington, until his death in 1991. She maintained her membership under the leadership of Bishop William L. Washington and was an active member of the Mother’s Board up until her health declined. She loved working at the church and was known for her delicious cakes which she baked from scratch. Many people in and out of the church would come to her requesting that she bake one of her homemade cakes. She took pride and joy in her cooking and in serving God and people.

Lorraine loved to travel and go on cruises. She would go on a cruise every year for about seven years. She also loved to sing and dance and her favorite past time activity was bowling. She joined a bowling league and won numerous trophies while traveling and competing with the bowling team. Sometimes she also won money.

In 2013 Lorraine’s health began to decline and her three daughters took care of her until the time of her demise on June 25, 2017. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Barbara Maness Bos (Thomas), Doretha (Rita) Maness Owens (Ishmael), and Lisa Edwards Shoffner (Kenyatta), all of Greensboro, NC; five grandchildren (Mario, Terrell, Moriah, Antoine, and Ivana) and ten great-grandchildren; along with four special nieces, Ivy Lewis of Deptford, NJ, Sabrina Maness Scott (Colen) of Greensboro, NC, Shawn Oglesby of Durham, NC, and Dana Gary of Raleigh, NC, who all grew up together with Lorraine in New York City. She also leaves Shawn Edwards, who later became known as a second mom to her and her four children, Kiericka, Matthew, Kadesh and Kedesh, who they affectionately called “nana”.

Also left to cherish her memory are five brothers; Elmer Shamberger (Katie) of Greensboro, NC, Ezell Maness (Mae) of Greensboro, NC, Lacy Maness (Arlene) of Robbins, NC, Ronzell Maness of Augusta, GA and Anthony Maness of Greensboro, NC; three sisters, Mildred Matthews of Durham, NC, Eleanor Scotten and Priscilla Foxx, both of Robbins, NC, along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
