Josefa Oliveras

July 20, 1929 ~ February 21, 2018 (age 88)

Josefa Oliveras Otero, lovingly called “Mama”, “Abuela”, and “Pepita”

Josefa Oliveras went to be with the Lord on 2/21/18. Born on 7/20/1929 in Manatí Puerto Rico, she was one of 9 children: she had 4 sisters and had 4 brothers. She is survived by her former husband and the father of her children - José Soto, and her 5 children and their spouses: Edgar and Carmen Soto, Wanda and José Luis Torres, Edna and Bill Hawley, Sonia and Steve Huff, and Joel Soto. Her adult life was spent raising her children and working hard in various manufacturing companies in Chicago and in Puerto Rico. Her life legacy was to encourage and teach her children to work hard and live wisely. She had many wise (and funny) sayings, and taught us to appreciate Puerto Rican cooking at its best. Her greatest source of joy was to be surrounded by her large family. Even in her old age she wanted to be present wherever the latest gathering was to take place, especially if any of her 15 grandchildren and spouses were going to be there: Jeremy and Katie, Aaron and Raven, Irene and Wayne, Sandra and Eric, Jason and Nicole, Marlene and Giovanni, Tito and Dayana, Joshua, Eric, Kenneth, Serena, Joey and Anna, Melanie, Mia, and Seth. Her happiness was compounded by having 20 great grandchildren. Her zest for life was evident at family gatherings, as she would play her favorite Spanish music and dance. She loved to whip up on anyone who would challenge her to play dominoes and the board game Aggravation, and her favorite optimistic sayings to anyone who seemed down were: “Don’t worry be happy”, and “Shake it, but don’t break it.” This would always bring laughter. We will sorely miss the matriarch of our family, but we all know that we will see her again one day, where Alzheimer’s and a frail body won’t be a hindrance to dancing anymore.

A celebration service of her life will be held at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home in Kernersville, NC on Saturday, 2/24. Visitation with family will be at 10am, followed by the funeral service at 11am. Interment will be afterwards at Main Street Methodist Church Cemetery in Kernersville, NC.
