Lydia Icard Moretz, 94, passed away April 26, 2017 at Hospice Home of the Piedmont. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00PM Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 896 Old Winston Road, Kernersville, NC.

Lydia was born on September 22, 1922 in Alexander County, NC to the late Mertie Viola Bumgarner Icard and Abel Cyrus Icard. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Gerald Wilson Moretz, Sr.; sisters, Mae Fox, Kathleen Wilson and Elsie Moretz; brother, Willard Icard and a grandson Toby Allen Underwood.

She is survived by her children, Priscilla Moretz, Sheila Patterson and husband David, Martha Bacon and husband Richard, Gerald Moretz, Pearl Hudgins and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Tom Underwood and wife Adrienne, Maria Turner, Jonathan Patterson, Beth Patterson, Jessica Bacon, Rachel Bacon and husband Katsuya Oi, Nathan Moretz and wife Eve, Jeremy Moretz and wife Jessicah, Luke Hudgins and fiancé Elizabeth Vargas; great-grandchildren, Oliver Underwood, Icy Underwood, Brianna Turner, Alex Turner, Rylie Moretz, and Calvin Moretz; great-great-grandchild, Arayla Oakes.

Lydia was a faithful member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for the last 65 years. If the doors were open and she was able, she was there. She was very active with the cradle roll and kindergarten departments of her church, creating her own lesson helps, and working with Community Services as she aged. She loved the out-of-doors and was an avid gardener, growing all her plants from seed and canning and freezing most of the food she ate. Having lost her mother at the age of 7, she was mother or grandmother to all the children passing through her life and yard. Many a child has shared a homemade fruit roll up, popsicle or a slice of watermelon on a hot summer afternoon. She had a generous heart and helped all who came to her in need if it was within her power. She loved to sing, had a dry wit, fabulous sense of humor and an incredibly contagious laugh. She will be deeply missed by all those who were privileged to know her.

Memorial donations in her honor may be made to the Tri-City Christian Academy Building Fund, 800 Clinard Farms Road, High Point, NC 27265 and the Disabled American Veterans, DAV.org
