On the 7th of October 1930, in Winston-Salem and just around lunchtime, Kenneth Gray Rushing came into the world. He was greeted by proud parents Vassie Linville Rushing and John Paul Rushing, and brother Billy. Later, his status as youngest (and most spoiled, no doubt) was lost to his brother Harold and later, sister Helen. Growing up, he developed a profound love of NC barbecue and a vicious sweet tooth. He drove fast, played hard and always paid his debts. When the Korean War broke out, he heeded the call to serve his country and worked as a Navy mechanic aboard the USS Lake Champlain in the Mediterranean. While serving, he was introduced to his future wife of 64 years, Jean Lenderman who was taken by his handsomeness and his really cool motorcycle. Post war, Kenneth worked as mechanic for Piedmont Airlines for 34 distinguished years and with Jean’s considerable help, brought daughter Deborah and son Todd into the world. As a father and later grandfather and even later great grandfather, Kenneth excelled in his greatest role yet — as the patriarch and resident goofball of the family. In addition to making a really great monkey face, and sharing (the same three) stories of his time abroad with anyone who would listen, Kenneth was generous with his considerable wisdom and his substantial wit. He was kind, genuinely funny, and filled to the brim with a remarkable love and pride for his family.

On Tuesday, April 11th, 2017 at the age of 86, surrounded by four generations of family and countless friends, Kenneth left the world and took up residence in heaven and in our hearts. He’s survived by a long list of family: his wife Jean; sister Helen Wilson and brother Harold Rushing and wife Elsie; son Todd Rushing, daughter Deborah Bowman and husband Keith Bowman; grandchildren Alisha Hill, Dara Daniels, and Kayla Bowman; great-grandchildren Keeley Bowman, Nathen Coffield, Chaz Hill and Ty Hill.
