John David McKinney, 83, died May 20, 2017

Funeral Services celebrating his life will be held 11:00AM Thursday May 25, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church of Kernersville with Rev. Dan Wilkers officiating. The family will visit with friends from 5:30PM until 7:00PM Wednesday evening at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home.

A native of Indianola, Mississippi, John was the son of the late Mable McCaleb and Homer McKinney. John would attend Mississippi State University for two years and later enroll at Oklahoma State University where he received an Associate’s Degree in Baking. He served his country with the United States Air Force. After his service with the Air Force, he returned to Mississippi State where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business. John received a William Walmsley Scholarship to American Institute of Baking and would graduate as a Master Baker in 1961. For the next ten years John would work in management at bakeries in Bermuda, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.

While living in Wyoming, John was retired from Amoco Production Company after serving from 1971 until 1993. Wyoming offered him the opportunity to continue his childhood love of hunting and fishing, as well as raising cattle and Missouri foxtrotting horses. When John retired he moved to Destin, Florida where he bought a boat and spent many enjoyable times fishing the Gulf of Mexico.

In addition to his parents, John also was preceded in death by his first wife Phyllis Johnson McKinney, and his brother William H. McKinney.

Survivors include his loving wife Frances “Fran” Jones McKinney of the home; daughters Robin Morris and Frank of Columbus, Montana, and Lisa Rea of Durango, Colorado; sons David McKinney and Deb of Powell, Wyoming, and Cole McKinney and Lynette of Cortez, Colorado; step-son Dean Havas and Bonnie of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren Casey, Homer, Pam, Carolyn, Jarrod, Cody, Reagan, Sidney, and Alyssa; great-granddaughters Kayle and LaKota; numerous nieces and nephews; and many extended family and friends including  Amy Carrickhoff and Brent of Oak Ridge, NC.
