Barbara Joyce Hill (Himes), 86, after an almost 20-year courageous battle with breast cancer, passed in peace surrounded by family on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 in Charlotte, NC.

Born September 3, 1930, she was a native of Portsmouth, OH and graduated from Portsmouth (OH) High School in 1948, before attending The Ohio State University.

She married George E. Hill Jr. on June 3, 1951 and was married for 64 years until his passing in November 2015.

As the wife of a high school and college basketball coach, Barbara lived in many places.  She enjoyed her work as a high school Latin and math teacher at Thomas Ewing Jr. High School in Lancaster, OH (1966-69).  She worked in the church office at Clemson United Methodist Church in Clemson, SC (1969-74), while George was an assistant coach for the Clemson University men’s basketball team. She held the position of Assistant Vice President overseeing personnel, purchasing and training at Central Trust Co., in Celina, OH (1974-81). After moving to Anderson, SC in 1995, Barbara became the Office Manager at the law firm of MacIntosh, Sherard, Sullivan & Brousseau, and enjoyed her most rewarding work until her retirement in 2010.  After retiring, she and George moved to Greensboro, NC and lived for five years, before relocating to Charlotte in 2015.

 

Barbara was very active in her church Sunday School class at both Trinity United Methodist Church in Anderson, SC and Guilford College United Methodist Church in Greensboro.  She also enjoyed volunteering at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte.  In addition to her love of the OSU Buckeyes, she bled orange for her Clemson Tigers, and was proud to be a high level IPTAY donor over the last 30 years of her life.  She was an avid reader and supporter of the public library and was a lover of animals.

 

She is survived by children, Barbara E. and husband Porter Stokes of Clinton, SC; Catherine E. Hill and husband Glenn Myrick of Oak Ridge, NC; son Joel E. and wife Denise Zoratti-Hill of Clemson, SC and daughter Suzanne Franklin-Pires and husband Curt Pires of Charlotte, NC. Her six grandchildren – Dr. James Porter (JP) Stokes; Joshua Stokes; Madison Zoratti-Hill; Sam Franklin; Gabrielle Pires and Gracyn Pires and her five great grandchildren. Her sister and best-friend Victoria Himes Sanders and husband Gordon Sanders of South Portsmouth, KY.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Hill Jr.; her mother and father Arthur Olan and Nellie Himes and brother Gerry Himes.

The family would like to thank all the doctors; nurses and attendants at Novant and Hospice Care for their warmth, care and blessings during the last months of Barbara’s life.

Funeral Services will be handled by Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Services, Kernersville, NC and burial will take place in Wheelersburg, OH.
