Greensboro - Edna “Marie” Williams, 88, died December 28, 2009 following a courageous battle with heart disease and osteoporosis. Funeral Services celebrating her life will be held at 1:00PM Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Rev. Julie Peeples, and Pastor Emeritus Dr. Bill Smith officiating. Interment Services will follow at 3:00PM in the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church in Ramseur. Marie was born in Greensboro on January 9, 1921 to H.O. Williams, Sr. and Beulah Brown Williams. She spent most of her younger years, however, in Randolph County with her beloved brother, H.O. Jr.. After her mother died when Marie was two years old, she was raised by her father, devoted Aunt Emmer, and her grandmother Viola Williams. She always said her Daddy wanted her and H.O., Jr. to have the wholesome background of being raised on a farm. She was always thankful for that experience. She graduated from Greensboro High School, worked at Blue Bell, and later for 40 years at the Sears Catalog Order Center. She was a lifelong member of Congregational United Church of Christ where she served in the choir, Women’s Circle, church library, as a Deacon, Sunday School President, and helped with the church visitation. Marie delivered Meals on Wheels, assisted at Urban Ministry, and participated in the annual Crop Walk for Hunger as long as she was able. She was a tireless servant of the Lord and was an inspiration to others. She was devoted to her brother and her niece and nephew. Marie never wanted much for herself, but always thought of others. She worked tirelessly to help her Glenwood neighbors in need. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from Noon until time for the services at the church. Harold is a native of Chicago, IL, and was the son of the late Alice Matson Kilburn and Harold D. Kilburn, Sr. He spent most of his adult life in Tampa, Florida prior to moving to Kernersville in 2006. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 59, and a WWII and Korean War US Navy Veteran. He lived most of his life on the water, where he thoroughly enjoyed fishing, boating, and making sure his family enjoyed their time together. Mrs. Pennington was born March 20, 1922 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Nathan Phillip Throckmorton and Levia Lillie Liggett. She was the 4th of five children and grew up in Muskogee, OK. She married the late William Herbert Pennington, Sr. in 1943, whom she met while working for the war effort. They raised three children, living in Tennessee, Idaho, Pennsylvania, Japan, New Jersey, and Connecticut. During Mrs. Pennington’s retirement years, she and Herb stayed active cycling, dancing, golfing, traveling, and wintering in Vermont where they often skied over 100 days a year. She enjoyed skiing, and placed in numerous amateur Nastar races in her 60’s and 70’s. Betty was very involved with every church she attended. She was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she also was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Lee Pennington. He was a US Army Korean War Veteran, having served with the Paratroopers of the 11th Airborne Division out of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He had worked as an auto mechanic for S&R Motors over the span of 40 years and also worked with Parks Chevrolet, Tri-Town Automotive, and Central Automotive. She transferred to the new store and worked as a cashier and office manager. In the 1940’s she relocated to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty Co. as an assistant Comptroller and Secretary until their liquidation in the 1950’s. She then joined the investment banking firm of Johnston, Lemon, & Co. Inc. as an administrative assistant and secretary until her retirement in 1978, when she returned to Guilford County. After her mother’s death in 1982, she did volunteer work with the Mental Health Association of Greensboro, Mobile Meals, and community services such as knitting and crocheting pre-mature baby caps and afghans. She also participated with various activities at her church Grace United Methodist Church of which she was a member. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her sisters Oletha Parrish, Irmagene Betty Joyce, and Edna Pegram, and her brothers Harmon, Drexel, and Aerie Brown. A native of Guilford County, he was born June 26, 1924 to the late Ada Elizabeth Hanner and Thomas Benton Waugh in the same bedroom, and home, as his mother. Jim attended Georgia Tech, St. Cloud State Teachers College, and Appalachian State. He was a University of North Carolina graduate where he was a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. Jim was a WWII US Army Veteran and served overseas on Iwo Jima. He was married to the late Gayle Lumsden Waugh for 38 wonderful years. He was a former member of the Friendship Sertoma Club and an insurance agent with Central Triad Insurance prior to his real estate career. A long time real estate agent, Jim was a member of the Greater Greensboro Realtors Association. He taught real estate classes for a number of years and was an agent with Seawell Realtors prior to his retirement in 1999. In 1992, he was named Customer of the Year by Carvel Ice Cream in Greensboro. In addition to his wife, his brothers Benton A. and William H. “Bill” Waugh and a sister, Doris Hanner Waugh preceded him in death. A native of Whitley County, Kentucky, Fred was born April 13, 1928 to the late Ditha Lavern Hill and Frank Wesley Lawson. He also was preceded in death by his son Larry, who died at age 7, brothers Delbert, Dillard, Carl, and John, and sisters Toledo and Glenda. As a young man, Fred joined the Air Force in 1946. After his discharge, he moved to Ohio where he married Ethel Blakley of Whitley County. They made their home in Miamisburg, Ohio for 35 years. Fred worked as plant foreman at Sucher Packing Company and then at General Motors where he was a supervisor. Fred, and his family, were long time members of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Miamisburg where he served our Lord as an active deacon. He and Ethel retired to Port Richey, Florida in 1984 where they lived for 22 years. They moved their membership to Harvest Baptist Church in Hudson, Florida. Though Fred lived through many difficulties including losing a son and a long fight with Parkinson’s, he was always known as a kind, loving man, and a fine example for his daughters and grandsons who adored him. His family, and friends, will miss him greatly. Kernersville - Brady Wilson Mullinax, Sr., 88, died August 19, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury.
A native of Catawba County, Brady was born October 4, 1920 to the late Hattie Edna Reitzel and Loyd Alexander Mullinax, Sr. He also was preceded in death by his sister Helen M. Harbinson and his brother Loyd Alexander Mullinax, Jr. As a young man, Brady served in the US Navy as a Water Tender First Class with the Sea Bees. In World War II he was the first man off the ship onto 18 different islands in the South Pacific. His job was to search for a pure water supply for the sailors. In 1945, after the War, he accepted the job of Water Superintendant for the Town of Kernersville where he was employed for 37 years. Brady was fondly referred to as the “Bee Man”. A lifelong beekeeper, he was instrumental in getting the Honeybee named the “NC State Insect” in 1973. He inspired the Kernersville Honeybee Festival, a popular annual event. He was a life member of Forsyth County Beekeepers Association and also a life member of the NC State Beekeepers Association. Brady never met a stranger and was a generous friend to all. Many will remember him for asking, “How can I help you Brother?” He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church for 60 years. He was a life member of the Kernersville Masonic Lodge #669 AF & AM, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a life member of Kernersville Chapter #205 Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include his wife of almost 62 years Mary Vance Mullinax of the home; daughters Barbara M. Hodge and Paul of Ashland, Virginia, and Laura M. Rathbone and Mike of Kernersville; son Brady Wilson Mullinax, Jr. and Karen of Atlanta, Georgia; grandsons Mark Mullinax Weavil who is serving in the US Army 82nd Airborne Division, and James Brady Melton of Kernersville; several devoted nieces and nephews. A native of Forsyth County, he was the son of the late Florence Ellen Grubbs and John Lewis Slater. He had been a very good football player in his High School days at Mineral Springs High School. He also was an avid Wake Forest fan. He retired in 1988 after 40 plus years with AT&T. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was a US Navy Veteran. Bruce was a family man, devoted to his loving wife Shirley, and especially enjoyed spoiling his grandson Josh. Kernersville - Harley Gentry Roper, Our beloved “Papa Bud” was welcomed into Heaven’s Glory on August 5, 2009 after a courageous battle with heart disease and diabetes. We have no doubt that he was met in heaven with thunderous applause by our loved ones who journeyed before him including Papa’s parents, Harley and Mae Passmore Roper, his loving son, Clyde Olen, brothers John, Joel, and Harold and his beloved father and mother-in-law Olen and Lillie Brown. Born in Bryson City, North Carolina on September 19, 1932, Harley was a welder by trade. He also had owned two businesses, Roper’s Texaco and co-owned with his brothers Nantahala Tool & Die Company. Left to cherish many wonderful memories are his wife of 56 years, Betty Jo Brown Roper. His children who mourn him: Sandy (Wernfried) Kueng, Harley Jr. and wife Jill Roper, and Beverly (Mitch) Shears. Grandchildren on whom he doted: Chris Ables (Donna), Trinity (John) Hanson, Raini (Tom) Aldridge, Danielle (Wes) and Amanda (James) Roper, Andrew Kueng and Grady Shears all who live in the Kernersville area. She was retired in 1987, after 30 years of service, as an occupational Nurse with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. She was a docent at the Reynolda House and the historian with many records of her classes and her family. She was a longtime member of the Sedge Garden United Methodist Church. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her brother Wallace Paul Smith and her sister Linda Combs Smith. A native of Forsyth County, he was the son of the late Dorothy Irene Hale and Billie Anderson Prim. He was an independent sales representative for 20 years and retired in 2001. He was a member of the Kernersville Masonic Lodge 669 AF & AM. He had been an avid Coach for the Kernersville Little League, and had coached Palomino League as well. He was preceded in death by his sister Kathy Prim Royall. Grady was born April 2, 1923 in Forsyth County to the late Leva Lucille Dean Kirkman and G.O. Kirkman. A lifelong native of Kernersville, he graduated from Kernersville High School. He enlisted for WWII military service on November 26, 1942. He was stationed in Florida and Pearl Harbor, and served in the US Naval Aviation, where he was a gun-air school instructor and a link trainer. He was discharged in 1946. He built and operated Kirkman’s Grill during the 1950’s, and he was retired from Proctor & Gamble in Greensboro in 1988. He loved music, playing his guitar, and especially enjoyed performances by his children. He was an avid golfer and was proud of his five hole-in-ones. He was ever loyal to Veteran activities and performed many hours of military funerals with the 11th District Memorial Honor Guard. He loved his church, Main Street United Methodist Church, and was excited to be able to attend a few times after his health had begun to fail.

Mr. Muller was born January 10, 1948 to Charlotte Anne North Muller and the late Otto William Frederick Muller, Jr.. He was a native of Daytona Beach, Florida and was a retired police officer. He had risen to the rank of Sgt. within the police department and had worked in several jurisdictions in the Florida area. He was a Vietnam US Army Veteran and received the Bronze Star Medal as well as several other citations of honor. A kind and generous man, William was certainly devoted to his family. He was always helping others, volunteering his time to Youth league sports and particularly his son’s teams. In addition to his father he was also preceded in death by his brother Bruce. Surviving to cherish his memory are his loving wife Gina Porcelli Muller of the home; daughter Sara Elizabeth Adams of Ormond, FL; son Brian Scott Muller and his wife Becky of Greensboro; mother Charlotte Muller of Edgewater, FL; sister Linda Moore of New Smyrna, FL; brother Gil Muller of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Abby Adams, and Caden and Addison Muller. A native of Wakefield, Michigan, he was the son of the late Eda Marie Johnson and Venner Isaac Valli. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was involved with several groups and classes at the church. He held a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry and a Masters Degree in Education. He was a teacher and counselor for a number of years prior to his retirement. He was a WWII Navy Veteran. Henry was preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley Mae Small Valli.
