Walnut Cove - Mabel Smith Hartness, 77, went home to be with her Lord on December 30, 2008. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Alice Hagler and William Smith. She was a devoted Christian. She taught Sunday School, and was secretary, at the Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Aaron Clark Hartness, and brothers William and H.T. Smith. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, wonderful grandmother, and a caring friend. She never met a stranger. She also was a prolific writer, and her letters to the editor were regularly published in the Winston-Salem Journal for over 40 years. For the last several years she had enjoyed daily activities at the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center. She loved nature, life and reading her Bible which she had read completely seventy-two times. In addition to her loving husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Michael and a brother Ed Idol. A native of Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late Mary Jane Mitchell and Olin Sylvester Giles. He was a longtime member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the J.C. Grose Sunday School Class. Bill was an active community, civic, and church leader. He was a member of the Kernersville Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Bill was the founder of the Triad Classic Car Club and orchestrated many “Cruise In’s” in the Triad area. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Ami Mischler and his mother Evelyn J. Love Giles. Kernersville - Robert Jones Hines, Jr, 74, went gently into the arms of Jesus Monday, December 22, 2008 at Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home following a lengthy illness with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He was a hard-working man who cared deeply for and provided well for his family and was known for his humor and wit. Robert was born July 29, 1934 in Millington, Tennessee and graduated in 1952 from Millington High School. He began his working career with Humko Products in Memphis, TN leaving there in 1965 to work for Ford Motor Co in Lorian, Ohio. He worked for Ford for many years as a General Supervisor, retiring in 1988. After retirement, he served as a Deacon in Central Baptist and First Baptist Churches in Spring City, TN. In 1999, he moved to Kernersville to be closer to his family and became a member of Calvary Baptist Church (Winston-Salem) and later Triad Baptist Church in Kernersville. In addition to Jaki, his loving wife of 54 years, Robert is survived by son Robert,III (Nancy) of Novato, CA and their daughters Vanessa (Rob) Charette, and Erin, Shannon, and Molly Hines; his daughter Karen (Carl) Kearney of Oak Ridge, NC and their daughter Bailey. Vanessa and Rob have given him two precious great grandsons Nicholas and Nathan. A member of Calvary Chapel, she was employed as a waitress with The Plaza Restaurant. Being more than a waitress, she would soon become your friend. She never met a stranger and truly changed the lives of those around her. Rita was kind, caring, giving, and unconditionally loved everyone who surrounded her. She was born October 4, 1916 and was raised in Kernersville, the daughter of the late Lake Gray Snow and Charles Franklin Snow. She attended Kernersville School where she was valedictorian of her graduating class. Four years later she graduated, with honors, from Women’s College (now UNC-G). For the next seven years, she taught at Colfax School until her marriage in 1943 to Isaac Cody Adams. After her husband’s untimely death from cancer in 1950, she stayed at home to raise her four daughters and attended Salem College studying music, religion, and theology. When the youngest began school in 1956, Cornelia returned to teaching at Kernersville School and later became the school’s librarian. In 1972 she became the librarian for Colfax School where she remained until retiring in 1978. As a widow, living on a teacher’s salary, she was nevertheless able to provide her daughters with ballet, piano, organ, and violin lessons making sure each received a college education. She filled their lives with music, the arts, literature, and a passion for the beauty of nature. Cornelia was a Bible scholar and devoted member of the Kernersville Moravian Church, where she served for many years as choir director, Sunday School teacher, prayer group leader, and the first woman Elder. An enthusiastic, and knowledgeable, historian, Cornelia was the founder and first president for the Kernersville Historical Preservation Society in 1982. She also served for twenty years on the Kernersville Friends of the Library Board, which she helped found and organize. In addition to her husband Isaac and her parents, she also was preceded in death by brothers Charles F. Snow, II and Wesley Snow. Survivors include her daughters Jane Birken and husband Bill of Chapel Hill, Amy Campbell and husband Don of Newton, Emily Adams of the home, and Sarah Long and husband Dan of Raleigh; sister Theresa Edwards of Kernersville; grandchildren Melissa Campbell Johnson, Ted Campbell, Beth Everhart, and Dustin Aber; six great-grandchildren. In her leisure, she enjoyed her family and friends, music, preparing special surprises for the children that she so dearly loved, and watching movies. She relocated to NC in June of ’06 and became a faithful member and friend to many at Gate City Family Worship Center. Oak Ridge - Wade Dean Sudderth, 87, died peacefully and went to his eternal home Tuesday November 25, 2008 after several months of declining health. Services celebrating his life will be held 11:00AM Saturday November 29, 2008 at Alamance Presbyterian Church in Greensboro with Rev. Dr. Michael Kurtz and Rev. Karen C. Kurtz officiating. Interment will follow in church cemetery. He was born July 26, 1921 in Caldwell County to the late Martha Nevada Walker Sudderth and Rufus Ross Sudderth. He moved with his family to Guilford County at an early age. He attended Sumner High School and was a member of Rocky Knoll Baptist Church where he received Christ. He served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Kingman in the Asiatic-Pacific area. Following his tour of duty, he began his employment with J.D. Wilkins Company (Fabrication of Steel) as a foreman and known as “Sud” for forty-one years. He moved to the Battleground area of Greensboro where he resided for a number of years. He was a member of Battleground Baptist Church and a volunteer of the Battleground Fire Department. He was married to Colleen Hackett Penry in Lawndale Baptist Church August 11, 1967 and moved to Oak Ridge in 1974, where he joined Oak Ridge United Methodist Church. He was a master fixer and on an occasion repaired a cook pot in exchange for a coconut pie from a neighbor. He loved to make gifts for friends and family. Wade had a unique sense of humor, and enjoyed morning coffee with friends at McDonalds. He truly had a special relationship with his animal friends, Bishop and Buddy. Mrs. Sylvia Searcy Youse was born September 1, 1949 to the late John Will and Roberta Moore Searcy, in Danbury, North Carolina. She departed this life Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was preceded in death by brother her James Searcy and sisters Edith and Barbara Ann Searcy. Mrs. Youse was a graduated of Shaw University in Raleigh, NC majoring in Business Administration. At the time of her death, she was co-owner with her husband of Youse Enterprise Inc., Kernersville, NC. Her siblings considered her their baby sister even though she wasn’t. She would constantly state “I am not a housekeeper, I am a business woman. Such a business woman she was until the end and she finished well. She was a faithful member of In His Hand Worship Center, where she served as a Deaconness and member of the finance committee. She was fondly referred to as she was always there. She had an unwavering love for her husband and was always by his side. Prior to joining In His Hand Worship Center, she was member of Love and Faith Christian Fellowship. He coached the girls softball team of Summit Church for 16 seasons, and his players were truly one of his passions. His grandchildren, Joseph Brant Lohr, Cade Evers Lohr, Coen Scott Lohr, Sydney Faith Lohr, and his unborn fifth grandchild --due in March -- were the treasures of his heart; also surviving is his father Lloyd Harvey Lohr of Toledo, Ohio, and a third brother, Timothy B. Joe was a graduate of Whitmer High School in Toledo, Ohio. He loved to work in his workshop, golf, and attend auctions, but he loved most of all to be with his children and grandchildren. The most important factor in his life was the Lord Jesus Christ. He accepted Christ as his Savior when a teenager, and has tried to live for Him all his days. Kernersville - Lucille Reynolds Sherrill, 89, passed away at Wake Med Hospital in Cary, NC on Friday, September 26, 2008. Her uncle, Alonzo Carlton Reynolds, was a well known educator. He was a former principal and superintendent of Buncombe County. A.C. Reynolds High School was named in his honor. Paul retired from McLean Trucking in 1985 and had worked at the Pierce Funeral Home in Kernersville part time and full time for 31 years, and came to love many, many people in the Kernersville area. Paul was a member of the First Christian Church in Kernersville, life member of the Kernersville Masonic Lodge #669 A.F.&A.M, past Master, Chaplin and many other offices in the lodge, and was a Shriner. Honorary member of the Stokesdale Masonic Lodge # 428 and a member of the Kernersville Civitan Club. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Odell Morris and Wayne Morris. She was born on February 26, 1923, a daughter of the late Elmer and Mary Skeen Bodenheimer. A graduate of Sedge Garden High School, she married the late Walter Schulz in 1942. She was last employed as a bookkeeper for Easter Construction of Winston-Salem and previously worked for Johnson’s Modern Electric of East Bend. She was a member of Fountain of Life Lutheran Church in Kernersville, where she served as church secretary, treasurer and Sunday School teacher. In 1954, they participated in an extensive amateurs light airplanes tour of South America. Hazel worked at various jobs where her travels took her. Her last job was at the Piedmont Triad International Airport. In 1986, Hazel enjoyed a cruise from New York to Australia. She enjoyed the outdoors, wildlife, flowers, and animals. She also loved to spoil her family and friends. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Lindsay Harper, Marion Gray, and James Ned Stafford. She was a graduate of Kernersville High School, owned and operated her own beauty shop, helped organize and was a board member for Crisis Control Ministry of Kernersville, organized and led Girl Scout Troops through her church, and found time to volunteer for the PTA of Kernersville High School. She was also part of the core organization for the Kernersville YMCA. Melba was a true advocate for the poor, sick, and needy. In addition to her parents and her husband she also was preceded in death by her daughter June Peddycord Stancil, grandson James “Rick” Richardson Peddycord, sister Kathleen Barrow Pegram, and brother William H. “Wuz” Barrow. Gemma’s last place of residence was the Handmaker Senior Community in Tucson, Arizona, near her children. There she was known for her sunny personality, and received loving care from the staff. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, they owned a grocery store and produce market, and in later years she managed dry cleaning and butcher shops. After retiring she loved working in her yard and around her house. She also loved babysitting her great grandchildren and “dog sitting” her son’s two “retired” greyhounds, and watching them race around her large backyard. She lived independently on her own home until 2003, when she moved to the Salem Terrace Assisted Living facility in Winston-Salem, where she lived until March of this year. He retired in the early 80’s but continued to work part time for several more years. In retirement he was extremely creative in making animals, birds, and other pieces from wood. He truly was proud of all his accomplishments. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kernersville. He especially missed his wife of 61 years, Mary Gray Vaughan, who passed in June of 2007. He was also preceded in death by a grandson Robbie Elliott, a sister Delilah V. Ellis, and brothers Grover Beck Vaughan and David Ledford Vaughan. He fought a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's before other illness & complications became too intense. Gilbert joined the US Navy after graduating high school in Clay City, Indiana. He served on the the USS Hoggatt Bay where he was a machinest before enlisting in the Air Force, where he also was a machinest. After being honorably discharged, Gil was employed briefly by IBM before starting his own business, Metric Machine in Greencastle, IN. A business opportunity brought him and his family to North Carolina where he lived a short while in High Point and over 40 years in Kernersville, NC. In 1993, Mr. Horton retired from Sara Lee in Winston-Salem where he was director of Engineering. He was a Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. . Kernersville - Angenithus Gerardus "Andy" DeGroot, 84, died January 15, 2008. A native of The Hague, Holland, "Andy" actually escaped from a German work camp. He married Carolina Maria Jansen on October 17, 1945 and they came to America shortly after the liberation of Holland on February 14, 1949. Carolina had taken the silk from a US Soldier's parachute and made the blouse she wore when they married. Carolina died December 20, 2006 and he thoroughly missed her since. He owned The Valley Bake Shop in Oakland, NJ for a number of years. Family and friends all knew how much he loved to bake for them, including Jeff and Debbie's beautiful wedding cake, birthday cakes for all the grandchildren and many, many friends, and his annual Christmas Stollen. "Andy" was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and an "honorary" member of Holy Cross Quilters. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Berry Barrow and one son William Harlan Barrow Jr. He is survived by his children Gilda Barrow Zimmar and husband David Zimmar of Seattle, Washington, John Jefferson Barrow of Kernersville, Cindy Barrow McGee and husband Scott McGee of Kernersville; Christopher Lindy Barrow and Crystal Carter of Walkertown and Berry Todd Barrow and wife Angela Barrow of Trinity, NC. He served in the US Army during WWII in General George Patton's 3rd Army. His Combat Engineer Company landed at Omaha Beach Wuz loved to play golf and for many years was member of Pines Knolls Golf Club. Later in life, Wuz enjoyed singing karaoke at many local establishments. Above all else he loved his wife and children. He was quick with his wit and comment and one rarely had to wonder what his opinion was on an issue. A child of the 20's, a son, a student, a soldier, a patriot, a husband, a father, a chef, a family leader, a salesman, a singer, a comedian, a sage, and always an astute student of life. Wuz was the kind of person that if you ever had the privilege of meeting him, you never forgot him. A Kernersville character of the highest order. He lived a full life and was most proud of doing it "his way". The family will receive friends at Pierce Jefferson Funeral Home in Kernersville on Saturday night January 5, 2008 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held in the Pierce Chapel at the funeral home at 2:00pm on Sunday January 6, 2008 followed by a graveside service at Mt. Gur Cemetery in Kernersville. . Kernersville - David Henry "Dave" Holt, 78, died January 1, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center following an extended illness. Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00PM Friday at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Lloyd, Rev. Rick Carter, and Dr. J.C. Grose officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Stanly County, he was born May 31, 1929 to the late Robert Glen Holt, Sr. and Mary Ann Thompson Holt who survives. He was also preceded in death by a daughter Beth Holt Leagans and a brother Robert Glen Holt, Jr.. Dave was a 1955 graduate of High Point College(now High Point University) and became their Registrar June 1, 1968. He retired on his birthday May 31, 1994. Prior to coming to High Point College he was professor at Oak Ridge Military Academy for 12 years. At High Point College he was professor of History and Political Science, and retired as "Professor Emeritus". He received two Masters Degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a US Army Korean War Veteran. He was a longtime member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for 42 years. His Sunday School Class was recently renamed the "Dave Holt Christian Fellowship Class". He was a member of the Kernersville Lions Club and was a Melvin Jones Fellow. He received the "Community Distinguished Service Award" from the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce in 1998. He also had served the Town of Kernersville as an Alderman for 12 years. Survivors include his wife of 52 years Helen Wood Holt; daughter Anne Holt Southern and husband Terry of Kernersville; son-in-law Bruce Leagans of Lewisville; mother Mary Thompson Holt of Asheboro; granddaughter Katherine "Katie" Leagans; sisters Betty H. Elliott and J.W. of Carthage, and Pat H. Brown of Gastonia; sister-in-law Peggy G. Holt of Asheboro. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Thursday night at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home, 213 W. Mountain Street, Kernersville, and other times at the home. Pallbearers Bill Cope, Jack Barrier, Bob Dalton, Luther Conger, George Walker, John Staples, Mark Orcutt, and Irvin Lucas are asked to be at the church at 1:15PM on Friday. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Oglesby, Bennie Weaver, Lloyd Southern, Shelton Lilley, Ivey Redmon, and Ed Lang, his Sunday School Class, and members of the Kernersville Lions Club.
