Kernersville - Ellen Shaw Clodfelter, 97, died December 28, 2007 at Sunbridge Nursing Facility in High Point. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM Monday at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Neill Shaw and Rev. Patrick Snow officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Guilford County she was the daughter of the late Donna Lowe and James Shaw. Known as "the Gum Lady", she was a member of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church for over 70 years, where she was also a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and Circle #2. She was an active member for many years of the Horneytown Fire Department Ladies Auxillary. She was a member of Guilford County Homemakers Society and was presented many awards over the years for her cooking and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband Delbert Clodfelter and a son Jerry Clodfelter. Survivors include a grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. He was the son of the late Katherine and Tom Guy. He was retired from the US Air Force having served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by a son Tom Guy. Survivors include his wife Muriel Gambill Guy of the home; step-daughters Shirley Lawson and Ray of Winston-Salem, Teresa Bowers and Jimmy of Germanton, and Regina Borden and Trent of Florida; step-son Tim Miles and Nancy of Walkertown; three grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was born January 8, 1915 in Camden, NJ. She was the daughter of the late Mary Melloviwiz and Anthony Stolarski. She served as a Deputy Sherriff in Burlington County, NJ for a number of years. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Columbiettes. She moved from Maple Shade, New Jersey and had made Kernersville her home for the past 18 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Michael John Curia, Sr.; her brother Frank Stolarski; her sister Irene Zawisza; and a grandson Michael Kyle Curia. Survivors include her son Michael J. Curia and his wife Mutsuko Gonokami-Curia of Winston-Salem; daughter Sharon Allen and her husband John of Collegeville, PA; daughter-in-law Carol Pennington and her husband Herb of Kernersville; sister Helen Patton of Cherry Hill, NJ; seven grandchildren Dawn Leifeste and her husband Brian of Kernersville, Daniel Curia and his wife Lori of Apex, Dennis Van Hise and his wife April of Exton, PA, Laura, Dana, and Jonathan Allen of Collegeville, PA, Emi Curia of Winston-Salem, and honorary granddaughter Katie Pennington of Kernersville; and four great-grandchildren Megan and Jessica Cain, and Jenna and Claire Curia. A native of Guilford County, he was the son of the late Gertrude Gray and Otis Needham. He was a landscaper working with Phillips Management Group for 30plus years. Mr. Needham loved his family and his passion was with all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Virginia "Jenny" Needham. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00AM Friday December 28, 2007 at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roger Pinnix officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery. Born November 10, 1975, he is the son of Beverly Thompson Hill and Keith Monroe Huie. He was a graduate of East Forsyth High School Class of '93 where he excelled in wrestling. He finished 1992 as State Wrestling runner-up in his weight class. Chad was and avid body builder and was runner-up in his division many times. He worked for many years with Living Water Pools with his closest and best friend Danny Hanson. Chad was of the Baptist faith. Chad loved to go to Topsail Island and fish, especially carp fishing, with his Dad. Chad was loved more than he ever knew and will be missed more than words can describe. Interment will follow in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. A native of Forsyth County he was the son of the late Elizabeth Ann Parrish and Elisha Ladd. He was a WWII Veteran, where he served with the 82nd AirBorne Division. He was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church, where he faithfully served the bus ministry and choir of the church for 40 plus years. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Mulvey Ladd who died in February of 2006. He was also preceded in death by a son Terrance Ladd, and sisters Margaret Betts and Shirley Ladd. Survivors include his daughter Victoria Hester and Jack; sons Gary Ladd and Sharon, Charles Ladd, Jr. and Jane, and Thomas Ladd and Lynn; daughter in law Betty Wiles; sisters Beulah Worrell, and Wanda Eller; brothers Thurman and Clay Ladd; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A native of Newcastle, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Kathleen Helen Matthews and Ralph Reed Kegarise. He was a WWII Army Air Corp Veteran. During WWII he flew 26 missions as pilot of a B-26 Marauder with the 9th Air Corp 394 Bomber Group. He was a graduate of Mount Union College and a retired CPA. She was a member of the Friends of the Library, and thoroughly enjoyed her Bridge Club. She was the wife of the late John Theodore "Jack" Morgan, and she was also preceded in death by her brother Thomas Watson North, Jr.. A native of Forsyth County, he was born July 16, 1923 to the late Martha Alma Macy and William Addison Angel. Prior to his retirement he worked in textiles and Drexel Heritage Furniture Company in High Point. He attended Kernersville Friends Meeting as long as his health permitted. He was preceded in death by sisters Nellie Angel Brannon, Bessie and Ollie Angel, and Zula Angel Hedgecock; brothers Howard and Hugh Angel. A native of West Chester, PA, he was the son of the late Mary Thelma Seaboldt and Alton "Pete" Orlando Reed. He formerly lived in Eagle and Downington Pennsylvania, Herndon, Virginia, and Jacksonville, Florida. He was a graduate of Villanova University Class of '73, and received his Masters Degree from Drexel University in 1980. He was retired from Bell Atlantic after 37 years and currently worked with United States Postal Service in Greensboro. He served with the Minquas Fire Department in Downington for several years during the late 60's and early '70's. He was a member of Windsor Baptist Church, First Baptist Church in Downington, PA, and Vienna Presbyterian Church and Bayview Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in Germany from 1961 to 1964 and received a Good Conduct Medal. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Henry Lodge #57 in Fairfax, VA and also was a member of the Scottish Rite. He was District Deputy Grand Master for the 4th Masonic District and was District Instructor of Work for the 58th Masonic District. Survivors include his loving wife Marilou Garland Reed of the home; daughter Mary Beth Reed of Santa Clarita, CA; son Timothy Reed and his wife Lysa Reed of Aspen, CO; grandchildren Taylor and Brenon Reed of Aspen, CO; brother James Nelson Reed of Wayne, PA. God, in his infinite mercy and wisdom, summoned the Angels to the Brian Center in Lexington, NC to bring Mrs. Alberta Stack "Bet" Grubbs to Himself on the morning of November 7, 2007. She was not frightened at all, but had been anxiously awaiting the call from her Heavenly Father to take her home to Heaven. She was born to Della Warner and Pervie A. Stack, Sr., who predeceased her. She was married to Willie Hauser Grubbs, Sr., and they spent most of their life in Kernersville. He passed away several years ago. Ronnie was born June 2, 1939 in Forsyth County to Earline Hubbard and James Lewis Osborne. He graduated from Kernersville High School in 1957 where he was an outstanding baseball and basketball player. During his senior year he outpitched Gaylord Perry to help Kernersville win the State High School Baseball Championship. Ronnie later signed a professional baseball contract with the Cleveland Indians. He played shortstop for McLean Trucking, City Beverage, and Whitney Furniture fast-pitch softball. He was awarded Tournament MVP on both the State and the East Coast Regional levels. Ronnie was an avid fisherman, golfer, and absolutely loved hunting. He took the most pride in the years spent as a Little League Coach helping numerous young men fulfill their dreams of playing baseball. In 1971 he coached a group of 15 year old All Stars who advanced to the semi-finals of the Senior League World Series. He continued to coach, from behind home plate, in his most recent years as he watched his grandsons play. In 1984 he was inducted into the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Sportsman Hall of Fame for his excellence as a basketball and baseball player. He is also a candidate for the State Softball Association Hall of Fame. Ronnie was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served on various committees and was co-chair of the Senior Adult Heritage Club. He served as Communion Steward along with his family. He retired from Duke Power after 30 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, and high school sweetheart, Judy Whicker Osborne; daughters and sons-in-law Debbie Smith and Mike of Kernersville, Tracy Whitaker and Michael of Walnut Cove, and Amy Cook and George of Walnut Cove; son and daughter-in-law James Ronald "Rod" Osborne, Jr. and Christine of Milton, GA; grandchildren Matt, Mallory, and Meredith Osborne of Milton, GA, Casey and Jason Smith of Kernersville, Brandon, Austin, and Camryn Whitaker of Walnut Cove, and Haley Cook of Walnut Cove; sister Alice O. She was born November 21, 1912 in Forsyth County. She was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Crews and William E. Flynt. She was a long time member of Kernersville Moravian Church. Louise was a beautiful girl who became a beautiful woman. She started from humble beginnings as one of eight children. When her mother died very young, Louise rose to become the matriarch of a very large family, and they loved and respected her without reservation. She will be deeply mourned by her family and friends. She was the married for sixty-one years to the late Clyde E. Carter who died in February of 1994. She was also predeceased by a daughter Sandra Carter. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00PM Monday, October 8, 2007 at Kernersville Moravian Church with Rev. Don Winters officiating. She was born in Kernersville on March 11, 1930 to the late Dorothy Elizabeth Mayes and John Martin Cummings. She was a graduate of Kernersville High School and St. Leo's Hospital of Nursing in Greensboro, NC. She spent most of her time in the Medical field of Pediatrics. Under Kiki Xammara at Wake Forest University she was a statistician and worked patient check-in at reservation. She also worked in space control with the former Piedmont Airlines. Once she retired she opened a small daycare and was fondly called "Mommie Pat" by the many children in the Kernersville area. Pat was a lifelong member of Kernersville Moravian Church, where she played in the band, sang in the choir, and along with her husband was a Youth Leader. She was a retired member of the Joseph Kerner Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Red Hatters. Pat went blind in 1964 for a time of nearly two years. With assistance and loving care from Charlie, the grace of God, and professional staff of Duke Medical Hospital her sight was restored. Thank you, Charlie, for your kind and loving care during her time of darkness. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Lucy E. Foster, a brother John E. Cummings, and a beloved cousin Mrs. Ted Kerner. Survivors include her beloved husband Charles L. He was born in Coneautville, Pennsylvania, but he was a native of Erie, PA. He was the son of the late Emma Fuller and William Samuel Hamilton. He was a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in finance and marketing. He was a WWII US Navy Veteran, where he proudly served as a Lieutenant Commander on the USS Beatty out of Philadelphia, PA. He was especially close to Colonel Tommy Outerson. He loved his children, and grandchildren, and had a special bond with his granddaughter Brianne. He loved fishing, hunting, small club memberships, and he had a particularly quick sense of wit. Lieutenant during WWII in the European Theatre. After his honorable discharge he became an employee of the United States Steel Corporation Railroad System. He retired in 1983 as the Superintendent of Locomotives at the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad in Greenville, PA. He spent 23 years retired in Aiken, South Carolina before moving to Kernersville, NC. He was a life member of the V.F.W., the Benevolent Paternal Order of the Elks, and past president of the Lions Club. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He had a lifelong love for baseball, the outdoors, his friends and above all his family. He will always be missed by his family and anyone who knew him. Born July 19, 1919 in Onida, South Dakota, he was the son of the late Rohe Vester and Stella Mae Eller Pennington. He graduated, in 1940, from Franklin and Marshall College with a BS degree in chemistry. He was one of ten children that grew up on farms in Ashe County, NC, and southern Lancaster County, PA. He was married to Betty Jane Throckmorton of Muskogee, OK. He left the plow behind and spent his career as a nuclear scientist developing peaceful uses of the atom. During the war he worked on the Manhattan Project that brought an end to the war. In 1957 he was assigned to Tokyo, Japan as the first Atomic Energy Commission's attaché for the Far East. He worked on reactors for ships, space vehicles, and other uses including medicine. Mr. Pennington retired in 1979. During his retirement years, Mr. Pennington and his wife stayed active cycling, dancing, golfing, traveling, and wintering in Vermont where they often skied over 100 days a year. They skied in amateur Nastar races, taught many to ski, and introduced others to cross country skiing before retiring from the 80+ Ski Club. Mr. Pennington was active in Scouting for over 50 years. He always enjoyed working with children, whether camping, skiing, building things, or science projects. His mother instilled faith and love of God that guided him throughout his life. He was very involved with every church he attended. Locally, he was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his daughter Susan Lee Pennington. Grose, and Dr. Al Ward officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Granville County he was the son of the late Frances Breedlove and Harold Lloyd O'Brien. He was a graduate of Stovall High School Class of '48, and from Wake Forest University in 1952. W.J. came to Kernersville in 1957 to work with the Bank of Kernersville, which later merged with Wachovia Bank. He was assistant Vice-President in the Kernersville Branch and retired in 1985. He received the "Man of the Year" award from the Jaycees in 1964. He received Lions Club International's highest honor, the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 1991. W.J. was a member of the Kernersville Lions Club where his special project the "Car Raffle" has helped raise thousands of dollars for the blind and visually impaired. He was honored with a "Lifetime Membership" from the Kernersville Lions Club. He served as president of the NC Eye and Human Tissue Bank for many years and was a member of the board of directors. He was a past president of the Kernersville YMCA and had served as treasurer of the YMCA Building Fund. He had served in nearly every YMCA office and was one of the top volunteers with the "Partnership With Youth" campaign. He was a member of the Forsyth County Social Service Board, chairman of Kernersville United Way Fund Drive, Director of Kernersville Fourth of July Celebration, Board of Directors and President of the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce, Charter Member and Treasurer of Kernersville Bi-Centennial Celebration, Inc., and a board member of Friends of the Library. He participated on the J.R. Paddison Memorial Library building committee which brought the current library facility to Kernersville. He was recognized, in 1976, by the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce with its Community Service Award. He was a member of Kernersville Masonic Lodge #669 AF & AM, and he was past Master of Henry F. Grainger Lodge in Oxford (1954). He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and served as church treasurer for 35 years and was a member of the Finance Committee. He was a member of the Administrative Board, past president of United Methodist Men, member of the Boy Scout Committee, member of the Board of Trustees, co-chair of the Building Fund, served on the Cemetery Committee and was a member of the Heritage Club. W.J. was very instrumental in starting Boy Scout Troop 940 at the church and three of his son's are Eagle Scouts. NC, 27107. Kernersville - George Solomon “Solly” Coltrane, Sr., 92, died February 8, 2007 at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00PM Saturday at the Main Street United Methodist Church, where he was a long time member with Rev. Don Lloyd and Rev. Dale Hilton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Guilford County he was the third of eight children born to the late Mary Pearl Wakefield and Lee Beacher Coltrane. His family grew up on a dairy farm and after attending Guilford College he came to Kernersville at age 19 to work for S.E. Hauser Grocery. He later operated the Coltrane Grocery Company. He has owned & operated the Tri-City Real Estate Company since 1962 and continued to work until his recent illness. He was given the designation “Realtor Emeritus” by the National Association of Realtors in 2005. He was a past member of the Kernersville Board of Alderman serving during the late 1940’s. He served on the Forsyth County Board of Education for eight years and was Chairman for four years. He also had served the Kernersville Local School Board during the same time. He served as a Forsyth County Commissioner for six years. He was Chairman of the Forsyth County Zoning Board of Adjustments for four years. He was a member of the Kernersville Wachovia Bank Board of Directors for 17 years and was Chairman for a number of those years. He was a member of the Kernersville Lodge 669 A. F. & A. M., Scottish Rite Bodies, and Oasis Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Kernersville Lions Club for over 70 years and was presented a life membership in October of 2004. He was a past President of the Lions Club, a Melvin Jones Fellow, and Jack Stickley Fellow. He received the “Community Service Award” from the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce in 1976 and the “Four Way Test Award” from the Kernersville Rotary Club in 1995. He was preceded in death by his first wife Grace Stafford Coltrane and a son Joseph. He was also preceded in death by sisters Eulalia C. Thacker and Edna Wakefield, and a brother Vernon E. Coltrane. “Solly” loved his family, his Lord, and his community. Survivors include his wife of forty years Rebecca H.
