Kernersville - Dorothy Holleman passed away in her sleep at her home on Christmas morning, December 25, 2006.

A Celebration of her life will be held at 2:30PM Thursday at Main Street United Methodist Church where she was a member.

A native of Goldsboro, NC she was the daughter of the late Monroe Gordon Piland and Berta Smith Piland. She was a homemaker and wonderful wife and mother.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years Gene Holleman of the home; daughter Sharon L. Holleman of the home; son and daughter in law Jonathan Bruce Holleman and Debbie of Conyers, GA; brother and his wife M.G. Piland, Jr. and Lillian of Atlanta, GA.

The family will visit with friends following the service at the church.

Cornelius - Darlene A. Zobrist, 80, died December 20, 2006 at the home of her daughter Sandi Harlow.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

A native of Omaha, Nebraska she was the daughter of the late Delbert Knudson and Oma Beryl Koser. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter Sandi Harlow and her husband Frank of Cornelius, and daughter Brenda Monroe of Crocker, Missouri. Her extended family will be listed at the time of the Memorial Service.

Kernersville - Carolina "Carol" DeGroot, 86, died December 20, 2006 at Evergreen's Nursing Center in Greensboro.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, where she was a member, with Father Joseph Tustin O.F.S.S officiating.

A native of Gouda, Holland she was the daughter of the late Jacobus Jansen and Carolina Laurier. She married her husband of 61 years on October 17, 1945 and located to Kernersville 25 years ago. She loved her "Quilters" of Holy Cross Church. She had a passion for singing and she also loved to sew. Her family was her treasure and she will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her husband Andrew DeGroot; daughter Evelyn Fine and John Moore; son Jeff DeGroot and his wife Debbie; sister Lena Schenck; and five grandchildren.

Master Sgt. Brian P. McAnultyKernersville - Master Sgt. Brian P. McAnulty, 39, originally from Vicksburg, Mississippi died December 11, 2006. Master Sgt. McAnulty died when the CH-53 helicopter he was riding in crashed just after takeoff in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California.

Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 Noon Tuesday December 19, 2006 at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with full Military honors will follow in Mt. Gur Cemetery.

A native of Hartford, CT, he was born October 16, 1967. He moved to Vicksburg, MS in 1978. He graduated from Warren High School in 1985, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April of 1988.

Following graduation from boot camp at MCRD Parris Island, SC, he was assigned to the School of Infantry in Camp Lejeune, NC for training as an infantryman. His first assignment was to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Norfolk, VA, for service onboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). In 1991, he was then assigned to Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team Company, Norfolk, VA. In 1992, MSgt McAnulty was selected for service with Marine Security Guard Battalion. Later he was assigned to Marine Security Guard Detachments in Asuncion, Paraguay; Seoul, Korea; and Budapest, Hungary. In 1996, he executed orders to 1st marine division, Camp Pendleton, CA for duty with 2nd battalion, 4th marines. During that same assignment, he deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/4 as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary unit from Nov 1998 until Apr 1999. In 2001, MSgt McAnulty was reassigned to Marine Security Guard battalion and trained to serve in the coveted position of Detachment Commander. MSgt McAnulty commanded Marine Security Guard detachments at US embassies in war-torn Bujumbura, Burundi, and in the dangerous city of Bogota, Colombia. After excelling as a Detachment Commander and being named "Detachment of the Year" in South America, MSgt McAnulty was selected to serve as an instructor/advisor at the Marine Security Guard school in Quantico, VA from Apr 2004 until Apr 2006. Weeks prior to this assignment however, during civil unrest in Haiti, MSgt McAnulty's expertise in embassy security and low intensity conflict was needed; he was sent to the US embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to ensure the readiness of the embassy's Marine detachment and provide tactical advice to security personnel. After assuming the duties of instructor at the Marine Security Guard battalion HQs in Quantico, VA, he revamped the weapons training for Marine Security Guard battalion and was directly responsible for improving the overall marksmanship capability of Marine guards, which proved vital in the battalion's role in the global war on terrorism. In conjunction with teaching duties, he continued an active security role within Marine Security Guard battalion. In Dec 2004, when terrorists attacked the US Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, MSgt McAnulty was immediately sent in to provide extra security and provide tactical and personal guidance to the Marines. In March 2006, MSgt McAnulty was transferred to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division in 29 Palms, CA and served as the company gunnery sergeant for Weapons Company and later as the operations chief. He deployed to Iraq with 3rd battalion, 4th Marines for combat operations in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His many Awards include: Navy And Marine Corps Commendation Medal (With Gold Star), Navy And Marine Corps Achievement Medal (With 3 Gold Stars), Navy Unit Commendation (With Bronze Star), Navy Meritorious Commendation Medal (With 3 Bronze Stars), Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (With 4 Bronze Stars), National Defense Service Medal (With 1 Bronze Stars), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5th Award), Navy And Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Marine Security Guard Ribbon (3rd Award), Expert Pistol (6th Award), And Expert Rifle (9th Award).

Brian was a passionate Marine who put the needs of others before his own. He was described as loyal, unselfish, kind, patriotic, and brave by his fellow Marines and peers. He had traveled the world with the Marine Corps and soaked up the local cultures and languages. He also loved soccer, military history, and deeply loved his family.

Survivors include his parents Robert and Frances McAnulty; brother and sister in law Brett and Stacy McAnulty; and his beloved nieces Cora and Lily all of Kernersville; and his beloved family with the United States Marine Corps.

The family will visit with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday prior to the service starting at 10:30AM until time for the service.

Kernersville - Effie "Jackie" Surber Wyse, 79, of 305 Mountain View Drive went home to be with the Lord from her earthly home on December 4, 2006.

Funeral Service will be held at 7:30PM Wednesday night at the Welcome Door Baptist Church on Vance Road. Interment services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.

A native of Damascus, Virginia she was the daughter of the late Martha Ellen Spriggs and Martin Luther Surber. She was a faithful member of Welcome Door Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class at the church.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years Herndon H. Wyse of the home; daughters Terry Sharp and her husband Ted of Kernersville, Patricia Pratt of Kernersville, Marsha Brown of Ruckersville, VA, and Jackie Parrish of Kernersville; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; she had several nieces and nephews.

Colfax - Loreah Davis Metcalf, 91, died November 13, 2006 at her home at River Landing.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 10:30 am in the Chapel at River Landing at Sandy Ridge, Colfax, NC. Interment will be held at a later date in the "Chapel of Memories" in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves TX.

A native of Port Arthur, Texas she was the daughter of the late Lolo Griffin and Will Moore Davis. Mrs. Metcalf was married to the late R.J. "Dick" Metcalf, who died in 1989, for 52 years. Mrs. Metcalf was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include her sons C. M. "Mickey" Metcalf and wife Jan of Kernersville, NC and R. M. "Mike" Metcalf and wife Tabby of Fancy Gap, VA; one granddaughter Allison Metcalf Allen and her husband Jonathan N. Allen and great grandson Levi Allen of Franklin, TN; and two grandsons Richard M. "Rick" Metcalf of Greensboro, NC and James M. "Jim" Metcalf of High Point, NC.

Kernersville - Delores J. "Dee" Davis, 66, of 4582 Longworth Drive died November 11, 2006.

A native of Durham, NC she was the daughter of the late Helen Ruth Eudy and George Robert Jackson, Jr.. She had attended Oaklawn Baptist Church and thoroughly enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Clyde C. Davis of the home; daughter Elise Davis of Largo, FL; son Craven Z. Davis of Winston-Salem; sisters Pam Byrd of Wilmington, and Bonnie Miller of Durham; brothers Dr. Larry Jackson and Jerry Jackson both of Virginia.

Kernersville - Hattie Crews Knowles, 77, died November 11, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral Service will be held at 1:00PM Monday at First Christian Church, where she was a long time member, with Rev. Pete Kunkle and Rev. Dean Tsiolkas officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Gur Cemetery.

A native of Forsyth County she was the daughter of the late Julia McDowell and Oscar Marian Crews. She was retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery. She had a passion for doing things for others. Cooking for family and anyone that came to her kitchen was what she loved most. "She filled her pots with love."

She was predeceased by her daughter Alice Faye Joyce; sisters Gladys, Eudora, Bernice; and her brothers Odell, Gilmer, Garland, Hobert, and Bob.

Survivors include her daughters and sons in laws Julia Joyce Atkins and Craig, Donna Joyce Rogers and Boyd, Dottie Joyce Sallie and Norman, Norma Knowles Pettit and Gene, and Nancy Crews who was like a daughter to Mrs. Knowles; grandchildren Kenny Rogers, Angie Rogers Bays and Rusty, Chris Rogers and Kendra, Misty Boles Lyons and Mike, Lynn Boles Kiger and Michael, Jessica Knowles, Kendall Pettit, Leslie Atkins Sexton and Jonathan, and Clint Atkins and Julie; great grandchildren Jordan Ann Atkins, Brady Atkins, Isaiah Bays, Ayla Kiger, Tarah Lyons, and twins William and Austin Lyons; and Rachel Morphis whom she thought of as a sister; also numerous nieces and nephews.

Colfax - Lucile Coleman Farrington, 89, of 8024 Clinard Farm Road died November 6, 2006 at her home.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Parkwood Baptist Church, 2107 Deep River Road in High Point. Rev. Eric Davidson and Rev. Bob Hiatt will officiate. Interment will follow in Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.

A native of Rosemary, NC(Vance County) she was the wife of the late William H. Farrington who died in 1984. She was retired from Western Electric Pomona Plant in Greensboro after 23 years. She was a member of the Western Electric Pioneers Club of Greensboro. She was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church, a homemaker, and a wonderful cook. She will be greatly missed by her dogs Shadow and Hector.

Survivors include her son Bill Farrington of the home; grandchildren Michelle Umburger of High Point, Jeff Farrington of High Point, and Steve Farrington of Kernersville; seven great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren; the mother of her grandchildren Jean Stroud; and her wonderful nieces who she loved so dearly Norma, Sylvia, Charlene, and Mary Louise of Greensboro, and Linda Sue of Raleigh.

Kernersville - Wilhelmina "Bunt" Michael Whicker, 99, died Sunday November 5, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday at Main Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with Rev. Don Lloyd, Rev. Dale Hilton, and Dr. Al Ward officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Born September 1, 1907 she was the daughter of the late Calvin Luther and Ellen Druzilla Michael. She was also preceded in death by her husband Kemp C. Whicker, a daughter Nancy Whicker Foust, a son Donald E. Whicker, a son-in-law Carl "Bud" Campbell, and nine siblings.

She was a graduate of Tyro High School. She was retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System where she served as Managing Dietician for Kernersville High School, East Forsyth High School, and Parkland High School.

She was an active member of Circle 3 of the United Methodist Women and she had received their Life Membership Pen. She was also recognized by the United Methodist Men for her distinguished service to their organization. She was a member of the Boyd Stafford Sunday School Class of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Heritage Club. She was a volunteer at the Shepherd's Center as long as her health permitted.

Survivors include her daughters Curtis Campbell and Judy Osborne and her husband Ronald of Kernersville; sister Ruby Shoaf of Tyro; daughter in law Dean Smith of New Bern; son in law Ben Foust of Siler City; nine grandchildren Tom Campbell and his wife Donese of Farmington, Bryan Campbell and his wife Debby of Lawrenceville, GA, Michael Foust and his wife Donna of Siler City, Gene Whicker and his wife Su of Rocky Mount, Alice Heitchue and her husband Tom of Wilmington, Rodney Osborne and his wife Christine of Alpharetta, GA, Debbie Smith and her husband Mike of Kernersville, Tracy Whitaker and her husband Michael of Walkertown, Amy Cook and her husband George of Kernersville; nineteen great grandchildren Nancy Stonehouse and her husband Chris of Clemmons, Coley Campbell and his wife Jamie of Franklin, VA, Sarah and Leah Campbell of Lawrenceville, GA, Tiffany and Nancy Foust of Siler City, Alexandria and Samantha Whicker of Rocky Mount, Amantha and Allison Heitchue of Wilmington, Matthew, Mallory, and Meredith Osborne of Alpharetta, GA, Casey and Jason Smith of Kernersville, Haley Cook of Kernersville, Brandon, Austin, and Camryn Whitaker of Walkertown; three great-great-grandchildren Lydia and Kemp Stonehouse of Clemmons and Caleb Campbell of Franklin, VA.; 15 special nieces and nephews.

Kernersville - Sarah Frances English, 71, of Hill-n-Dale Drive died November 2, 2006.

A native of Robeson County she was the daughter of the late Blanche Griffin and George Waylan Carter. She was a doll maker and sports enthusiast. She especially was true to her "Tar Heels".

Survivors include her daughter and son in law Karen Waters and Glenn of Cary; her sister Mary Stone of Rowland; a cousin JoAnn Bruce of Wendell; nieces and nephews and her many friends she had acquired over the years.

Kernersville - Leo Edward Chase, 82, died October 28, 2006 at the Sticht Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral Service will be held at 7:00PM Monday at the First Christian Church with Rev. Pete Kunkle officiating. Interment services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

A native of Bayonne, NJ he was retired from Lucent Technologies. He was a past member of the Pine Knolls Men's Golf Association and the Pine Knolls Swim and Racquet Club. He was a WWII US Navy Veteran.

Survivors include his wife Barbara J. Chase of the home; daughter Dr. Justine K. Vial, D.D.S. and her husband Rodrigo of Sandestin, FL; son Lance C. Chase of Daytona, FL; sister Grace DeBaun of Santa Rosa, CA; and brother George A. Chase of St. Louis, MO.

Kernersville - Pauline Bruce Jones King, 76, of 224 S. Church Street died October 22, 2006 at her home.

A native of McCreary County, KY she was the daughter of the late Martha Jane Taylor and Travis Lemuel Bruce.

Survivors include her daughters Sherry Ruth Clark Webster and her husband Robert, Patricia Diane Young and her husband Kenneth, Tammy Lynn Jones and her husband Jimmy, Kimberly Jones Roper, and Casey Garland and her husband George, III; sons Charles Jones, Barry Jones and his wife Lisa, and Bill Jones; sisters Nora Murphy and her husband Edward, and Dorothy Thomas and her husband Boyd; 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A native of Patrick County, VA he was the son of the late Dan and
Ruth Branch. He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie Pack Branch.

Survivors include his daughters Dovie Harris of Pfafftown, and Dorothy Kennedy of Kernersville; sons Roger Branch and his wife Barbara of Kernersville, Billy Branch and his wife Debbie of Belews Creek, and Bobby Branch and his wife Linda of Walkertown; 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Kernersville - Mrs. Mary S. Gore, 90, died October 4, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30AM Saturday at the Fountain of Life Lutheran Church with Pastor Rev. Keith Speaks officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.

A native of Catawba County she was the daughter of the late Clara Esther Huit and Rev. Carrol Orestes Smith. She was a charter member and founder of Fountain of Life Lutheran Church. She was the wife of the late Charles Edward Gore who died in 1974. She was also predeceased by her sisters Myrtle Boals and Ruth Carter McCuiston.

She is survived by nieces Clare Miller, Connie Owensby and her husband John, Mickie Sigmon and her husband J.B., and Carolotta Spruill and her husband Bob; nephews Frederick Carter and his wife Lou Gail, Allen Keller and his wife Lori, and Bernard Smith; cousins Betty Smith and Herman Smith and his wife Sue; special friends Joan Kapfer and Ed Coyner.

Kernersville - Jeane L. Dunmire, 82, died September 27, 2006.

Funeral Services will be held in her home state of Pennsylvania at a later date.

A native of Allegheny County, PA she was the wife of the late William C. Dunmire. She was also predeceased by her son Tom Dunmire. She loved her family first and foremost, but also loved to sew, read, and garden.

Survivors include her son and daughter in law Richard Dunmire and Sue of Kernersville; sister Nancy Venter of Vandergrift, PA; brother Robert Cooper of Springdale, PA; grandchildren Amy and Craig of Kernersville and her great granddaughter Sarina.

The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Saturday night at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home and a Memorial Tribute will follow at 8:00PM at the funeral home with Rev. Dean Tsiolkas officiating.

Kernersville - Dr. James L. "Jim" Turner, 78, of 5694 Bromley Drive went home to be with the Lord September 25, 2006 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He had struggled valiantly for a long time with Alzheimer's and Cancer.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00AM Saturday at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, where he was a long time member, with Rev. Ellis Rouse and Rev. Phil Bauguess officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

A native of Nash County he was the son of the late Annie Coggins and John Madison Turner. He was preceded in death by a sister Estelle Shearin and his son John Christian Turner. Married to Mary L. Turner since May 2, 1954 he was a loving husband, father, and friend to many. He was a member of the Walker Sunday School Class of his church and also served on the committee for Boy Scout Troop 779. Jim was an active member at the
Kernersville YMCA and was serving on the Board of Directors when the YMCA was built.

He graduated from Rocky Mount High School and also graduated from Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, NC. He received his degree as a doctor of dental surgery from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He started his dental practice in Kernersville before entering the Air Force. He served during the Korean War as a member of the US Air Force. After his time in the service he started a dental practice in Greensboro until joining the United States Public Health Service.

Survivors include his wife Mary L. Turner of the home and sons James Timothy Turner of Kernersville and Jonathan Paul "JJ" Turner of Winston-Salem.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM Saturday until time for the service, and immediately following the service, at the church.

Kernersville - Debra "Debbie" Clinard, 49, of 1046 Kerner Road went home to be with the Lord September 23, 2006 surrounded by her loving family. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was a loving mother to her daughter Ashley Clinard of Kernersville; son Dustin J. Clinard of Kernersville; she was the sister of Penny Willard of Kernersville and Michael V. Medlin of Kernersville; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Kernersville - Louise Eads, 77, died September 14, 2006.

A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00PM Saturday at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.

A longtime resident of Kernersville, she had grown up in Gastonia. She was the daughter of the late Ethel Robinson and Nathan Bentley, and she was the wife of the late Carl Eugene Eads who died in 1995. Loving her family, and never meeting a stranger, she was always at her best when she was around people. She had worked for many years at the Libby Hill Restaurant on S. Main St.

Survivors include her daughter Donna Ring and her husband Alvin of Colfax; grandson Brad Ring and his wife Serena of Colfax; her first great grandchild Levi Thomas Ring of Colfax; sister Joyce Bernard and her husband Elgar of Holden Beach; brother Walter Bentley and his wife Frances of SC.

Colfax - Mildred Ingram Mabe, 80, died September 8, 2006 at Beverly Health Care in Greensboro.

At her request, there will be no service and she will be buried at Shady Grove Wesleyan Church Cemetery.

She was born May 10, 1926 to the late Joseph W. and Lacy Wall Ingram. She was a widow of the late Otis Mabe. She was a member of Colfax Baptist Church and had worked for many years for the P and N Department Store in Kernersville where she developed many friends. She also had worked at Suzie's Diner in Kernersville.

Survivors include cousins and a very special friend Avahlee Stanley of Colfax.

Many thanks to the staff of Shular Health Care in Kernersville for the kindness shown to Mrs. Mabe for the nine years she resided there. Also, to the staff of Beverly Health Care in Greensboro, thank you for your excellent service for the last two years.

Kernersville - Frances Griffith Foreman, 77, a native of High Point, NC died Thursday September 7, 2006.

Funeral Service will be held Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 2:30PM at the First United Methodist Church in Prattville, Alabama. A local Funeral Service will be held at 10:00AM Monday, September 11 at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, NC. Interment will follow in Mt. Gur Cemetery in Kernersville.

She was the daughter of the late James and Fannie Sue Griffith. She was also preceded in death by sister Eleanor Benbow and a brother Robert Griffith. She was a graduate of Greensboro College with a degree in religious education and music. She received a master's degree in education from Georgia Southern College. She was a retired teacher having taught in Georgia, and for many years at Prattville Elementary School. While living in Brunswick, GA she was honored as "Young Woman of the Year" for her work in the Junior Woman's Club, the community, and her church. She was a very active member of Prattville First United Methodist Church where she had served on the administrative board, the Council on Ministries, and as a choir member. She had also served as chairperson of the Louisa Pickard Study Group. Mrs. Foreman organized the New Horizon Sunday School Class for young adults and served for many years as their beloved teacher. She belonged to the Askesis Study Group, the Autauga County Retired Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Living her life offering love and support to others, she will be lovingly remembered as a caring and giving person who loved her family, friends, music, travel, and the beach.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years Edwin Foreman; daughters Beth Basham of Landenberg, PA and Lynn Key and her husband Richard of Belle Mead, NJ; son Edwin Foreman, Jr. of St. Petersburg Beach, FL; brothers William Griffith and James Griffith; grandchildren Bergen Basham, Brannen Basham, and Laura Key.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Lettie Comer, Gladys Haney, and Rhumell McKnight and her brothers Bill, Wesley, and Odell Pyrtle. She was the wife of the late Fred E. Hampton. She also was preceded in death by a son Charles "Charlie" Joseph Hampton.

Survivors include her sister Margie P. Joyner of Pfafftown; daughter in law Mary Idol Hampton of Kernersville; grandson Charles Joseph Hampton, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Kernersville; and great granddaughter Kaitlyn Grace Hampton.

A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Catherine Murray and Joseph Logan. He was a WWII Army Air Corp Veteran and a member of the 459th Bomb Group of the Fifteenth Air Force. He was a retired officer with the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C.. He was 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus, Past District Deputy, and Past Grand Knight. He was preceded in death by his brothers Bob, Jim, Joe, and a daughter in law Sharon Boone Logan.

Survivors include his wife Geraldine "Geri" Logan of the home; daughter Jane Ostericher and her husband Bob, M.D. of Gig Harbor, WA; sons John P. Logan, Jr. of Kernersville, Ronald J.
