Growing up in Oak Ridge it was predictable that he would attend and graduate from Oak Ridge Military Institute where he received the excellent education that launched him into a most successful career in business and philanthropy. At the Academy, not only did he receive a good education, but there he met and married “the love of his life” Edna McMillan. For almost 70 years until her death in 2006, the couple formed one of the most dynamic and energetic husband and wife teams the area has ever known as they worked tirelessly for their family, church and community, he supporting her in her teaching, antique and community work, and she supporting him in his tobacco business, land development and construction, farming operations and political career. Buster has given leadership and financial support to many causes and received many honors and awards which included the State’s highest honor, “the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.” Among some of the most memorable are his service as a life-long member of the Lion’s Club; his service to Guilford County as a Board member and as Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners; as one of the original organizers of the Oak Ridge Fire Department serving as a Board of Directors member and donating the land upon which the fire department is now located; as one of the main organizers of the Oak Ridge Swim Club and one of the most active in procuring the land and finances for the building of this project; the hard work he did in establishing and chairing, for 26 years, the nationally known Oak Ridge Annual Horse Show and its financial benefits to the community; his tireless efforts as the prime mover in the establishment of the State’s Piedmont Triad Farmers Market which at its dedication caused Jim Graham, the then State Secretary of Agriculture to remark, “This is the happiest day of my life because I won’t have to hear from Buster Linville about the need to establish this market;” his dedication, leadership and financial contributions to Oak Ridge United Methodist Church and to the many ministers that he assisted along their way; and especially his life-long love and dedication to Oak Ridge Military Academy which earned him the “President’s Award,” the election as a Life Trustee Emeritus of the Academy, an annual birthday parade by the cadets from the Academy and the placement of the Linville name on the Academy’s Infirmary and Chapel. Buster is survived by a loving and caring son and daughter-in-law, David F. Linville, and Kathy Linville, who have dedicated their lives to his comfort and health during these last years and sister-in-law Ruth P. Linville. Even though he was almost immobile, they have taken him on trips to the beach and involved him in other activities which have enhanced his quality of life. Buster was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Edna M. Linville, and by his siblings, Pearl Eloise Linville, Buck Linville, Walter “Bud” Linville and Mary Linville Rouse and is survived by his sister, Juanita and her husband, Clarence Browning. In addition to his family and a multitude of friends, Buster will also be missed by his Labs, Molly and Haley, and his cat, Lucky Boy. The family extends appreciation to all the medical personnel and care givers who assisted Buster during his last illness, especially Carolyn Rich, Sally Ezzell, Melissa Stancil Franco, Dr. Robert Fried and his wonderful staff and Dr. Todd Early.
